The Future is Now
The Future is Now
The automotive industry has changed drastically over the last decade. Today’s vehicles have more powerful computer technology on-board than did the Apollo Spacecraft that landed men on the moon. Not to mention the fact that today’s cars are built better and require less service maintenance, while at the same time requires more sophisticated diagnostic and repair skills than ever before to keep these highly technical systems operating properly. The day of the “shade tree” mechanic performing repairs on vehicles are gone forever.
Consequently, the automotive service industry has evolved to support these technologies as well; it has progressed from the need for mechanics that could “tune by ear” in the 1970’s to the highly skilled, “life long learners” that has become the 21st century savvy technician/specialist of today.
One quick peek under the hood of any Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle reveals advancements in technology that demands qualified technicians. The Chrysler College Automotive Program (CAP) is designed to develop “Future Service Specialist” for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealerships.
In fact, the skills required to be a successful automotive service technician in a Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealership today bears little resemblance to the auto mechanic of years past. Today’s technician requires advanced technical training and the same kind of critical thinking skills as an electrical engineer.
In addition, according to the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor statistics, approximately 50 percent of current automotive service technicians will be eligible for retirement in the next 7 – 12 years. Creating opportunities for new technicians with the proper skill sets to fill these existing positions. With 210 million cars and light trucks registered in the United States and about 400,000 certified automotive professionals to keep them running there is a need for qualified service technicians.
Now, couple that with the fact that according to the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for automotive technicians are expected to increase by 9 – 17% over the next ten years, with jobs outnumbering the available number of skilled workers and you can see why learning on Chrysler specific technology while gaining product knowledge is a good career choice.
